It’s not yet known what sparked a grass fire Monday that kept firefighters from Swan River and Minitonas busy for several hours.

The Swan River Fire Department was called at around 12:30 p.m. Monday to a grass fire located at the landfill site. Large plumes of smoke could be seen for miles coming from the area.

Upon arrival the fire had spread past the landfill and over a road into an adjoining field.

Not helping matters - winds were gusting over 60 km/h at times in the afternoon.

The Minitonas Fire Department was called to assist and crews were able to contain the fire to a two mile area.

Crews spent over four hours fighting the flames.
