Mantioba's Conservatives are coming out against the somewhat common practice of refusing to fulfill Freedom of Information Act Requests. A bill introduced by the party would give additional power to the Manitoba Ombudsman to improve transparency and accountability. Under the current Freedom of Information Act, public bodies, such as municipal councils, are required to disclose information when requested. However, should the public body simply ignore a request, the current process is very cumbersome to force the body to respond. PC Culture, Heritage, and Tourism Critic Mavis Taillieu tells CJ Radio that democracy is thwarted when access is denied or inaccurate.
